Parsnips are a deliciously sweet root vegetable, said to improve heart and brain health, aid digestion and boost the immune system. The parsnips we place in our boxes are bursting with flavour and are sourced from local grower Farrington’s Farm who are based a mere 15 minutes away from The Community Farm.
Healthy soil, healthy vegSeeds are sown straight into the wonderfully fertile soil at Farrington’s Farm. As with all our partner growers, Farrington’s use organic farming methods which nurture healthy, rich soils, producing the tastiest vegetables. Farringdon’s sow their parsnip seeds in two tranches in May and June to allow plenty of time for optimum growth before harvesting takes place from mid-September through till early March.
Start right
Parsnip seeds at Farringdon’s are given a lot of care before they become strong, established plants. They are watered regularly over the summer months, and are thoroughly weeded twice in their life-span to minimise the weed competition for light and nutrients. This means they’re easy growers and reach a great size!
Pick and cool
At harvest time roots are sliced from the vegetable prior to being handpicked, using an undercutter. Once pulled from the earth they’re left dirty, to protect them from rotting. Keep your parsnips in cool storage at home, and enjoy for longer. They are delicious in a hearty slow cooker dish, as well as a classic side for your Christmas dinner!
