Veg of the Month: Courgettes

Veg of the Month: Courgettes

The beautiful courgettes you’ve been enjoying come from our partner grower Stephen Haslam, whose family farm is located in Tewkesbury.

Stephen also supplies us with tasty aubergines, cucumbers, beans and tomatoes. Courgettes are around 95% water and their skin is brimming with antioxidants, making them the perfect healthy choice, enjoyed hot or cold.
Firm favourite
The Haslam’s grow the Black Forest variety of courgettes because they’re a reliable, heavy cropper. They’ve deep green skins and are one of the larger varieties, making them popular with customers. The courgettes we receive are freshly cut and gorgeously firm. Make sure they’re refrigerated on delivery and consumed within three days to ensure you’re enjoying them at their best.

Early risers
These British-grown courgettes are ready early in the season thanks to Haslam’s three acres of heated glasshouses, which are powered by biomass burner. They enable the 1,500 plantlings to be kept at constant temperatures of 18º by day,  and 16º at night. Planted directly into the soil in late January, they’re ripe for cutting in mid-March and here at The Farm, we’re always quick to get our order in!

Nature’s best
As with all produce we sell, biological crop protection and pollination is vital to the organic growing process. Pests such as blackfly can attack courgettes, but they’re controlled by predators such as gall wasps. As for pollination, we leave that to the bees. These methods ensure we enjoy nature-friendly, chemical-free produce that’s good for the environment, and tastes sublime.
