News from the farm: June 2016

Everyone at The Community Farm was over the moon when, at this year’s Soil Association BOOM Awards, we won Organic Box Scheme of the year! Competing against national box schemes such as Riverford and Abel & Cole was a magnificent achievement and we were proud to be held in such high esteem. We’d like to thank everyone who buys our boxes for all their support over the past five years as we’ve grown and evolved as a box scheme into what we are today.

This award comes hot on the heels of being shortlisted for Best Local Food Retailer in the Western Daily Press Food & Farming Awards 2016. Even though we did not win, we were over joyed to have been shortlisted as a finalist.

Cob oven build

The Community Farm has a new cob oven. Built by a team a volunteers; led by Bjorn Bayer, a local expert and hosted by our own India Langley. The new oven is bigger, badder and more robust than the ever before. Working over a hot weekend in May it’s been built to last the test of time. If you want to get involved and have a go cooking in our oven then look out for cookery courses on our events page.

Bristol Food Connections

This year’s Bristol Food Connections was wonderful with many varied activities, talks and demonstrations going on around the city. We hosted a fantastic day on the field for our 7 May Community Farmer Day with approximately 50 people on the field weeding, learning about nature and applying practical skills. Earthwise hosted a day with children on the field and we planted hundreds of leeks and lettuces! I can’t remember seeing so much happening on the field in one day. It was fantastic.

Fond farewells

May began on a low note when we lost our much loved Traineeship Leader, Becky Chenery, to Redhill Walled Garden in Scotland. Sadly our intensive two year programme working with the Bristol Drug Project came to an end, and it was time for Becky to move on to pastures new. During her two years at the farm her infectious laughter spread like wildfire, lighting up the lives of whomever she came across. Combined with her desire and drive to complete every task to the best of her ability, she has had an astounding impact that will last for many years to come. Becky will always be welcome back at the farm and everyone here sincerely hopes that we get that opportunity.

Thank you Becky.

Indian Farm-to-Fork Cookery with Jo Ingleby

On Sunday 10 July we're welcoming award winning cook, Jo Ingleby, back to The Community Farm. She will share some tasty Indian recipes and cookery skills for spicing up your vegetables.

During the day we will harvest a range of produce fresh from the fields which we will transform into light bites for lunch and a main meal to share at the end of the course.

Cost: £57 (10% discount for Community Farm members)
