Last Saturday we welcomed people to the farm for the first course of our brand new Learning Programme and there couldn't have been a course to start with than a free workshop on Global Food Sovereignty. The course highlighted the very issues which inspired the founding of The Community Farm in the first place.
The course tutor, Amaury Ghijselings works with Belgian NGO Quinoa, raising awareness in Global Food Sovereignty issues. During a three month trip to Bristol he has been volunteering at The Community Farm and kindly offered to run this workshop for us.
During the day we played 'The String Game’ - a role-play game which looked at the challenges we face within the industrial food system and the inter-dependency of the many issues which arise across the globe, from seed production to getting the food to your plate.
We then looked into the history - for you cannot find solutions until you successfully understand how the problems came about in the first place. We then went onto looking at real and existing alternatives in Bristol of which there are plenty! We are fortunate to be in a city which is thriving with inspired individuals working on all sorts of fantastic projects to break the industrial food chain and encourage local, independent production of food.
When it came to lunchtime it really was a celebration of food! With all of our courses we encourage people to bring something to share and we ended up with a true feast on saturday!
Supermarket Free Challenge
Tying in nicely with the course topic, The Community Farm is launching a Supermarket Free Challenge this week to encourage people to think more carefully about where there food is coming from and the process involved in getting that food to their plate. To help you on your way, we now don’t just do fruit and veg - we’ve teamed up with local food cooperative, Essential Trading to deliver you pulses, rice, tinned tomatoes and so much more, straight to your door! Not only that, you can even go one step further and pay for it all in Bristol Pounds (get in touch for more info)!
If you’re interested in signing up to our Supermarket Free Challenge, visit us on facebook or twitter.
Food Sovereignty Movement
For anyone interested in getting involved in the Food Sovereignty Movement, the SW Regional meeting is coming up on Sunday 10th Feb 3pm-7pm at St. Werburghs Community Centre.
