We are looking for a Community Learning Volunteer to assist our Community Engagement Worker in leading school visits and children’s activity days at the farm. Alongside supporting visits to the Farm, the volunteer would assist in the promotion of our Learning Programme through writing blog articles and using our social media channels. The role would suit someone seeking volunteer experience in environmental education and community engagement.

Main responsibilities
The role of the Community Learning Volunteer will be to assist our Community Engagement Worker in running School visits and Children’s Activity Days at The Community Farm. The Community Farm seeks to re-connect children to food, how it is grown and the benefits of healthy eating. Alongside supporting visits to the Farm, the Community Learning Volunteer will assist in the promotion of the Farm’s Learning Programme through writing blog articles and using our social media channels.
Person Specification
This role would suit someone seeking volunteer experience in environmental education and community engagement who:
- Has some experience of working with primary school aged children, either through paid work or volunteering.
- Is interested in raising awareness about food, how it is grown and the benefits of healthy eating.
- Is familiar with using social media and writing blog articles
- Is an excellent communicator, enthusiastic and a good motivator.
- Can be flexible with which day of the week they can work (although we will try to get school bookings on a particular day of the week, we often have to work with what day the school can do).
- Is good at thinking creatively.
- Is self-motivated.
- Is willing to 'muck in’ with all aspects of the Farm’s activities.
- Has their own transport: the Farm is located in Chew Magna, where public transport is limited (a lift-share from Bristol may be possible).
- Has a laptop they could work from on site and from home.
- Is happy to work from home occasionally.
The role
Educational visits and children’s activity days:
- Support our Community Engagement Worker in preparing and leading practical activities and games at the farm with children from pre-school to primary school age.
- Support outreach visits to local schools.
- Help prepare resources for use on educational visits.
Copywriting:
- Writing blog articles documenting school visits and children’s activity days.
- Writing blog articles, press releases and text for newsletters to promote courses and workshops on our Learning Programme.
- Preparing useful resources for The Community Farm website such as food growing activity ideas for children and schools.
- Document any adult learning courses attended through blog articles on the website.
Photography:
- Take photos during school visits and children’s activity days for use in blog articles / promotional materials. Photos to be uploaded to the Farm’s photographic database (on Flickr).
Monitoring and Evaluation:
- Participate in the monitoring and evaluation of courses through surveys, questionnaires and quick and simple evaluations on the day of the event to help inform future courses and learning programmes
