This year I started taking delivery of a weekly vegetable box from The Community Farm. It gave me my first taste of truly seasonal eating and it's been an eye opener.
This winter season has offered a cornucopia of wonderful squashes, winter cabbage, fabulous carrots and leeks and full-flavoured potatoes, to name just a few of the delights.Earlier in the autumn I enjoyed knowing I was eating the runner beans that I'd seen growing the field in Chew Magna. I also found the new box ordering system on the website meant I could add to the basics really easily, so along came lemons, a jar of locally made organic marmalade, and lots of other goodies.
It can be quite a shock when you first get your box and see that some of the root vegetables like carrots and potatoes are covered in earth, but I soon learned that it preserves the flavour and texture much better. A good scrub with a brush brought them up shiny and new and so full of hearty, fresh flavour, it tasted like I'd grown them myself!
I'm a Board member of The Community Farm and it's been a challenging year but every time I get a box delivery I know that this wonderful organic food is grown with love - for the land and for community.
Our boxes are special and so is the team that produces them.
