Allowing people of all ages the opportunity to come out to the farm to learn about food, where it comes from and how it is grown has always been at the heart of what The Community Farm is about. In early summer last year we were awarded a Lottery Village SOS grant which enabled us to kick-start our education programme here at the farm, offering adult learning courses, children's activity days and school visits. Since the grant has recently come to an end I thought I’d take this opportunity to reflect on what’s been happening over the past year.
- During the grant period we welcomed 131 people to the farm on adult learning courses on a huge range of subjects including Natural bee-keeping, Orchard Management, Permaculture and Seasonal cookery.
- A total of 132 children visited the farm on school visits to learn more about food, how it is grown and the importance of healthy eating.
- 92 children attended our children’s activity days during school holidays, doing activities like building and planting a herb spiral, an insect hotel, as well as harvesting and preparing food to cook over a campfire.
- With the help of 77 volunteers from local businesses we have also made great progress in developing our Learning Field at the farm - a safe and accessible learning environment for people of all ages and abilities, showcasing different organic growing techniques.
