Veg of the month: Cherry Tomatoes

Veg of the month: Cherry Tomatoes

Our Cherry Tomatoes are thriving this year, thanks to the warm summer - they love sunshine and heat. As we hit peak production, we are very reliant on, and so grateful to, our amazing volunteers who do most of the pruning and harvesting each week.

Flora’s flourish
We raise all our own Cherry Tomatoes from seed in March, and plant-out in early May. We crop from mid-July, right through to early October. These beauties just keep coming! We have 350 plants currently growing in our new polytunnel, Flora. Pop your head inside, and the smell sensation is both distinctive, and divine.

Famous five
Head Grower, John English, chose five varieties for us this year, for a good mix of colour. They are Sakura and Bartelly (Red), Goldiana (Yellow), Sungold (Orange) and Black Cherry (Purple).  John has experimented with many different tomato varieties over the years, but has found these work best for us for yield, reliability and flavour.

Sweet success
As we enter Cherry Tomato peak production in August, we are keen to see if the 2019 season will match or exceed our past success. The last two summers have seen record yields, so they’ll have to do very well indeed to beat those previous results. We’ll let you know if we 'ketch-up’!
