John English, Assistant grower, gives an update

Time to catch up with ourselves: fixing polytunnels, gathering up crop covers and irrigation equipment and repairing machinery.

We still have some crops left in the field to see us through winter (as well as our polytunnel salads): an acre of leeks and plenty of cabbages, kale, sprouts and other brassicas.

Later plantings have really benefited from the rain and unusually warm autumn. Caulis and swede in the Lake Field: some of our biggest and best ever. Some earlier crops struggled through the dry mid-summer: You’ll have seen two-for-one “mini-cabbages” in your veg box!

Ian and a group of corporate volunteers braved mud and rain for a day, helping sus bring in nearly a tonne of lovely big swedes and turnips. Team-building inspired by community activism – it works!

For our last Community Farm day of the year, 25 volunteers did a great job pruning our apple trees. The morning started foggy (very November!), but it was a really enjoyable day working on the trees under the expert guidance of tutor Pauline.

Look out for the dates of next year’s Community Farmer Days on the website in the New Year.
