We are really pleased to announce that, as from this week, we are able to offer our customers the very best quality Apple Cider Vinegar that is both local and produced without the use of chemicals. After searching extensively for a local product that ticks all our boxes in terms of quality and taste, we found The Somerset Cider Vinegar Company just down the road in Brent Knoll, Somerset. Made from traditional varieties of Somerset cider apples such as Kingston Black, Brown Snout and Sheep's Nose, this superb product is fermented naturally for at least 3 years (incidentally, supermarket cider vinegar is produced industrially using dessert apples, concentrate and sugar in a process taking as little as 24 hours).
The health benefits of good cider vinegar have been known for centuries and are many-fold. Sadly, however, these beneficial properties have been largely forgotten, but many people are re-discovering cider vinegar and it's associated benefits believed to help relieve a wide variety of ailments, including arthritis, constipation, high cholesterol and blood pressure to name but a few.
Proper Apple Cider Vinegar with the “Mother-of-Vinegar” (aceatobactors, which create the cloudy appearance) intact is packed with a host of vitamins, including A, E, B1, B2, B6 and, particularly, Vitamin C, along with a number of minerals. It also contains enzymes for healthy bodily functions and malic acid, which can help to break down the deposits of uric acid that can build up around joints and cause pain.
Putting the potential health benefits to one side, let's not forget that it also tastes great and can be used in a variety of culinary ways. It makes a great salad dressing mixed with a good olive oil, honey and mustard, it can be used to tenderise meat prior to cooking, and is fabulous when used to braise pork in a casserole. It comes in a 1 litre bottle for £4.95 – compared with poor supermarket alternatives, it represents local quality at an excellent price.
