An introduction to Earthwise

Children pond dipping at the farm

Claire Rosling from Earthwise has been working with The Farm since the early days when we were just a small handful of staff with an office in a little cabin 2 miles away in Chew Magna. Claire initially worked with The Farm to start up our community engagement programme and then went on to found Earthwise which has been working in
partnership with The Farm ever since.

We asked Claire to give an introduction to Earthwise for anyone who's yet to hear about her work:

'The Earthwise mission is to re-connect young people with food, farming and the natural world. The word ‘reconnect’ is key to our ethos and everything we strive to do. We are all a part of nature’s wonderful web of life and as such are intrinsically connected with it. Over time as our society has shifted away from the woods and fields to spending more time indoors, inevitably our connection and understanding of nature and her processes has been reduced. We seek to allow children, young people and their families experiences on the land to rebuild that connection and encourage them towards caring and standing-up for our planet in the way that is so desperately needed.

Our Educational Visits for primary and secondary schools at The Community Farm, provide opportunities for children and young people to explore and learn about the wealth of biodiversity on the farm and understand how we can grow food in a way that works with nature, harvesting crops along the way to prepare delicious seasonal snacks. We also deliver a weekly Parent & Child Forest School group at the farm, Little Shoots (for children aged 2-5). You may also see us at a seasonal family event at the farm - our Festive Family Craft day is a firm favourite!

Alongside our work with the farm we also deliver sessions within schools across Somerset. If you’re interested in learning more about us please visit our website: getearthwise.co.uk'

The Little Shoots Parent & Child Forest School group currently has availability for the upcoming term. Sessions are on Tuesdays from 10.00 to 11.30am starting on 12th September. Autumn is such a wonderful season at The Farm - the fields are packed with produce and we have the wonderful apples pick and taste and pumpkins and squash to explore so get your little one booked in today!
